Road Trip: Fort Worth to Laredo (#15b)

Our full road trip was from Orlando, Florida, USA to Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico! This is the middle portion and is the Texas part from Fort Worth to Laredo (map locations E-G).

Fort Worth, TX (location E)

We came from Tulsa to Fort Worth and had a blast! We were sad to miss friends for our few days here, but a huge thank you for the accommodations at the Fort Worth Omni Hotel and all the recommendations!

While in Fort Worth, enjoyed walking downtown along the Heritage Trails. We started near the convention center and visited Hells Half Acre, the Fort Worth Water Gardens, learned about black history in Fort Worth including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s impactful visit in 1959 (at the General Worth Square), Hispanic heritage, cattle drives, and that JFK stayed in Fort Worth at the Hotel Texas the night before his assassination (at the JFK Tribute). We walked to the Tarrant County Court and by the sleeping panther sculpture.

We enjoyed going to the Fort Worth Stock Yards. The Stockyards Museum showed historical photos of the number of cattle going through the stockyards and Fort Worth’s role as a trading post at the end of the Chisholm Trail. The cattle drive was a fun and amazing experience and we saw cowgirls, cowboys, long horns, and so much shopping! The hats and boots are works of art and we particularly enjoyed browsing at M.L. Leddy’s Boots and Saddlery. We headed to The Basement Bar for a beer afterwards (Shiner Bock, of course).

We also very much enjoyed the food. The best burger we had was at Kincaid’s Hamburgers (Camp Bowie location), the best sandwich and salad (and beer selection) at the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium (also the coolest name), and the best steak was provided by our friends from afar and was at Bob’s Steak and Chop House (expert tip, eating at a table in the bar has more menu options)!

Austin, TX (location F)

Both Bob and I have been to Austin, TX before and enjoyed it so much that we decided to stop for one night here. It was delightful and weird (you know I had to say it…). Here are some of our favorite things we found. We did try on boots, but released them back into the store (no room in the suitcases for us)! The highlight, of course, was Bob insisting that we go to Austin Eastciders tasting room (it’s by far my favorite cider). The cherry lime is sublime (and now, I’m rhyming).

Laredo, TX (location G)

Our road trip was greatly enhanced with rest stops and fun. We discovered the adventure that is Buc-ee’s (and stopped at a number of locations in Florida and also in Texas south of Forth Worth). In Texas we also discovered Slovacek’s West that has delicious kolaches. We also enjoyed the outdoor decor at Slovacek’s. Enjoy!

Thanks for joining us this long! As a treat, here’s more of the cattle drive. Enjoy!
